When to use this guide
All equipment that is supplied by OntheNet is pre-configured therefore in most cases you will only need to follow the first part of this guide to connect the modem to your computer.
To determine what type of NBN technology you are on, please click here to find a technology that matches your hardware in your home or business.
The other sections of this guide may be useful when:
- You have performed a factory reset and need to completely reconfigure the device.
- You have purchased the device from someone else and need to configure it for your OntheNet service. Keep in mind that every modem is different.
Please note: references in this guide to “VDSL” are relevant to NBN services delivered via the FTTB and FTTN networks.

- Connect the TP-Link VX230v modem/router to mains power with the supplied 12v 1amp power adaptor and switch the modem on. The power LED at the front of the modem should light up. Using any other power adapter may cause damage to your modem.
- You need to connect a computer to the modem, do so by either:
- Using the included Ethernet cable, connect one end into an Ethernet port of the modem/router (these are the 4 orange ports on the back of the modem), and the other to the Ethernet/LAN port of your computer. The corresponding Ethernet LED at the front of the modem should light up.
- Alternately, connect to the built-in Wifi on the modem/router – this is usually the closest and strongest signal. By default, OntheNet ship the modem with a personalised network name, for example: ‘ONTHENET_12345’ . If you cant find your Wifi or this is the initial setup, look for a TP-Link branded signal in your computers Wireless settings, it should be the top most signal and be labelled “TP-Link_####”. The password can be found on the bottom of the modem.
- Connect your modem using the following steps:
For NBN FTTP, HFC or Fixed Wireless: Using an Ethernet cable, connect one end into the UNI-D port on the NBN connection box (refer to your Service Details for the correct port number) and the other to the port labelled LAN4/WAN on the back of modem. If using an NBN HFC connection you may need to connect your NBN Connection Box to the wall using the included cables.
For NBN FTTC: Connect a phone cable from the wall socket to the back of the NBN Connection Box. Then using an Ethernet cable, connect one end into the Gateway port on the NBN connection box and the other to the port labelled LAN4/WAN on the back of modem.
For NBN FTTN or FTTB: Connect a phone cable from the wall socket to the grey DSL port in the back of the modem.
Log into the Modem
After your modem has been connected and is showing some lights on the front, give it a moment to completely set up then follow these steps to log in:
- On your device, open your web browser (EG. Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari)
- Delete everything in the Address bar at the top of the screen and type in the following address: 192.168.1.1 then press enter.
- If that doesnt work, try entering http://tplinkmodem.net instead.
- If this is the first time using this modem or if the modem was reset, it will ask to enter a new password. Please enter ‘otn230’ in both fields.
- If the modem was not reset or if you have logged in before, simply enter the password as ‘otn230’.
- Click Login. If the modem asks you to enter the password again, do so and click Login again.
You are now looking at your modem settings, follow the below steps to configure your modem.
- If this is the first time using this modem or if the modem was reset, it will automatically take you to the Quick Setup screen. If not, click the Quick Setup button at the top of the screen.
- On the first screen, enter your region as Australia and your timezone as GMT+10 for Brisbane QLD (If you are in NSW, this option will also work fine). Click next.
- Next screen will ask for your ISP, select the Other option, should be at the bottom of the drop down list. Click next.
- On the next screen, you will be asked for some settings. Enter the following (check your Service Details for clarification):
- Click the VDSL tickbox.
- VLAN ID: Check your service details sheet to confirm, if the sheet does not show a VLAN ID, leave this box unticked. If it shows VLAN 100, tick the box and enter the number 100.
- Internet Connection Type: PPPoE
- Enter username and password from your OntheNet Broadband Service Details. You may need to retype the password in the Confirm Password field.
- Click Save at the bottom of the screen, leaving all other settings as they are.
- It will now ask for Wifi Settings. Enter the following:
- Band Steering: Turn on.
- SSID: Enter a selected Wifi signal name.
- Password: Enter a selected Wifi password. You can also enter the default password from the bottom of the modem if you wish.
- Confirm Password: Re-enter the password you entered in the box above.
- Click Next when done.
- The next screen will ask you to reconnect to the Wifi if the signal name or password was changed, check your computers Wifi settings and connect to the new network then click next.If you are connected using a cable, simply click next.
- The modem will now test your internet connection. If everything is correct, you will see a ‘congratulations’ message, click Finish. If something was incorrect you will see an error message, click retry and follow the above process again checking the details you entered.
- You will next see a screen confirming your settings, click next.
- Next screen is for your VoIP settings if you have VoIP home phone service with OntheNet. If you do not have a phone service, click next. Otherwise click the add button at the top right of the screen and enter the settings in the VoIP section below. Click Next when complete.
- On the final step, the modem will ask to sign up to TP-Link Cloud services, click ‘Login Later’ to finish the process (you may come back to this if you wish to use this feature).
- Confirm the LED light indicator for ‘internet’ is green on the front of the modem.
- You should now be connected to the Internet, you can confirm this by browsing to any website of your choosing.
- If this is the first time using this modem or if the modem was reset, it will automatically take you to the Quick Setup screen. If not, click the Quick Setup button at the top of the screen.

- Enter username and password from your OntheNet Broadband Service Details. You may need to retype the password in the Confirm Password field.
- Click Save at the bottom of the screen, leaving all other settings as they are.

If you wish to change the name and/or password of your Wifi signal, simply follow these steps:
- Click Basic at the top of the screen then click Wireless on the left-side menu.
- Ensure the Band Steering setting is turned on.
- Set the Network Name (SSID) to a name of your choosing. EG. ‘HomeWifi’.
- Enter a password for your Wireless signal. If you want to use the default password for your modem, it is written on the bottom of the modem.
- Click save once done, you will need to reconnect your devices to the Wifi with the new name and password after changing this information.
Follow these steps if you wish to update your Wifi details at any stage.
If you have a VoIP Home Phone service with OntheNet, follow these steps to enable the service on your modem
Note: If you are setting up the modem for the first time, you will need to follow the above Quick Setup steps first. In the Quick Setup, you will be asked to enter VoIP settings. If your modem is already configured:
- Follow the steps above to login to the modem.
- Click Telephony on the left side menu.
- Then click add in the top right corner of the screen.
Here are the settings you need to enter:
- Telephony Provider: Other
- Phone Number: The 4 digit Line ID/User ID found on your Service Details
- Registrar Address: Check your Service Details and use the following:
- For Personal VoIP: sip.onthenet.com.au
- For Business VoIP: sipb.onthenet.com.au
- Authentication ID: The save 4 digits you used in the Phone Number field above.
- Password: The Password found on your Service Details.
Once the above settings have been entered, click save and confim its working by making a test phone call to a number of your choosing or our echo service by dialing 8378.
